Depression – Dealing With The Basic Causes
60
Depression is a mental state in which the individual or group of persons are generally not happy. It is exhibited by a state of sadness or anxiety. The individual may remain inactive or even hyperactive and is associated with nervous breakdown.
This is one ill-health condition that affects men and women all over the world. Experts agree on the fact that most of the illnesses in the contemporary world are associated with depression. This includes growing number of persons with heart diseases, obesity and diabetes. These are also referred to as lifestyle diseases. Other ill health conditions that may result from depression include drug abuse, mental illness and even suicidal tendencies.
It is no doubt that the number of persons exhibiting depression is growing the world over. The big question is what could be driving these statistics?
Scientists have demonstrated that depression tendencies may run along a familial line. This has been demonstrated in a limited number of families. What may be difficult to isolate is as to whether genetic driven behavioural factors such as aggression is what actually drives a line of family members into depression. Even though genetic formation have been eluded as being a contributing factor to depression, its contribution is almost insignificant.
Lifestyle is the undisputable cause of depression. The social setting has significantly changed. There is more emphasis on nuclear family rather than the extended families that provided psychosocial support. Even more significant, is the fact that more and more people even prefer not to get married and make a family. Instead, more people are committing themselves to their careers and materialism. It is no wonder that any one visiting Europe or America from the Eastern Culture or African Culture will find the two continents too cold in emotions. Cases of neighbours not even knowing each other to the extent that one would die and not have been reported.
This drive towards individualism and materialism is indeed the cause of depression. These two things do not provide the ultimate fulfilment for the individual. They also encourage competition in life rather than complementation.
With such a scenario, any other event or physical condition that would otherwise not affect the individual would lead to depression and huge negative impact. Some of the events that are known to augment the depression are death of loved ones, substance abuse, sexual or physical abuse and conflict.
There are varying types of prescription that have been provided as an attempt to manage depression with equally varying success. The form of treat with proof of success and cost effective is Dahn Yoga. This exercises that are inspired by Ilchi Lee provide the communal psychosocial therapy and discourage attachment to materialism, they provide long term solutions cheaply.
